The Hope History Club

What The Directories Tell Us

2nd September 2021

We had such a good time looking at the old photos of pubs at our first session that we never got round to this presentation, based on information from local directories from the 1890s to the 1930s.

There's a lot of information, but you can see which pubs and clubs have been around for donkey's years and which are more recent additions. There's also some fine examples of adverts from the period.

Getting the Lay of the Land

2nd September 2021

It's hard when you look at Grimsby town centre as it is now to equate it with the photos we looked at in our first History Group session.

For example, we couldn't quite work out where the Old King's Head used to be, or the Queen's Head and then there was the mysterious building in Flottergate with a Hewitt's sign on it that no-one could identify.

Happily, the 1935 local directory helped to answer a lot of questions, especially as it included a street map.

Click on the link below to view the map, as well as information about some of the local pubs and the answer to the mystery of the Hewitt's sign in Flottergate.

Down the pub with the Hope History Club

2nd September 2021

Our new Hope History Club met for the first time on Zoom last Wednesday and we spent a very pleasant couple of hours reminiscing about lost Grimsby and Cleethorpes watering holes.

I'm not quite sure why I look so mardy in the picture. Probably we were talking about the local planners who decimated Grimsby town centre in the last century at the time!

Our next session will be on Wednesday 29th September. 2-4pm. If you'd like to join us, please contact us using the Get in Touch button below.
